Exeter ~ On Your Doorstep

Here is a handful of local Exeter attractions, which you may like to visit whilst staying at the Telstar Hotel in Exeter.

Exeter & Essential Devon

Dating back to Roman times, Exeter is rich in history and contains a beautiful cathedral. Explore the ancient city walls, the contemporary shopping centre and bustling nightlife.

Within Exeter there are 15 conservation areas including the Cathedral of St. Peter, the City Wall, Rougemont Castle, and the Quay area. There are over 1,500 listed buildings and Exeter's historic centre has been designated as an area of special architectural and historic interest.

Exeter Cathedral

Founded in 1050, it was established to provide support for the Bishop of Exeter in his ministry and mission across Devon, and to be a community of prayer, and Christian worship. The Cathedral building, dedicated to Peter, one of Jesus' earliest followers and the model for all subsequent bishops, is the finest example of Decorated Gothic architecture in any Cathedral. The building itself proclaims something of the beauty and holiness of God.

Exeter’s Quayside

Exeter's quayside features a unique collection of historic industrial buildings and warehouses. The main attraction being the brick built Custom House. This was the first purpose built custom house in the Country - constructed during the reign of Charles II. The warehouses along the quay have now been converted to a variety of antique shops, craft centres, restaurants and tea rooms.

Exeter’s Underground Passages

Dating from 14th century, these medieval passages under Exeter High Street are a unique ancient monument: no similar system of passages can be explored by the public elsewhere in Britain. They were built to house the pipes that brought fresh water to the city. Visitors to the Underground Interpretation Centre pass through an exhibition and video presentation before their guided tour.
